Join to apply for the Elevator Inspector role at NC Department of Health and Human Services Agency and Division Department of Labor Standards, Inspections Division Job Classification Elevator Inspector (S) Position Number 65024276 Grade NC15 Salary Starting Salary: $72,100 Description of Work The Elevator and Amusement Device Bureau of the Department of Labor, under the direction of the North Carolina Commissioner of Labor, is charged with administering North Carolina General Statute, Chapter 95, Article 14A (Elevator Safety Act), Chapter 95, Article 14B (Amusement Device Safety Act) and Chapter 95, Article 15 (Passenger Tramway Safety Act). Activities include inspecting elevators, amusement rides and tramways to ensure compliance with these acts and the North Carolina Administrative Code, Title 13, Chapter 15. Inspect a variety of passenger‑carrying devices to determine safe operating conditions and detect potential hazards or mechanical failures. Enforce provisions of state and national safety codes for elevators, escalators, personnel hoists, amusement devices and the like. Hold condemnation authority of unsafe equipment and conduct investigations of accidents involving unsafe equipment or operations. Work field‑based as a teleworker; must reside in Durham or surrounding counties or relocate within 30 days of hire. A valid driver's license is required; selected candidate must be approved to drive a State Motor Fleet Management Vehicle before employment begins. Working knowledge of the construction and operation of elevators, escalators and related equipment. Working knowledge of all applicable state and national safety codes for elevators, escalators, and related equipment as well as amusement devices. Knowledge of electrical and hydraulic systems. Ability to be trained in using basic computer programs and simple word processing skills. Main Physical Requirements Maintain high visual attention and mental concentration during inspection. Work in extreme weather conditions outdoors and in enclosed spaces with high temperatures. Move objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Walk long distances on uneven surfaces indoors and outdoors. Work in restricted spaces such as elevator pits. Ascend and descend ladders or steps on a device. Operate in environments requiring 50–100% daily activity levels. Position self for inspection, including bending, crawling, stooping, standing, lifting, and walking. Operate in potentially noisy environments. Certification and Licensing All NC Department of Labor Elevator Inspectors must be certified as a Qualified or Certified Elevator Inspector (ASME QEI‑1) prior to conducting independent inspections. Certification requires a rigorous background check and examination; if not already certified, candidates will receive study time and two opportunities to take the QEI examination. Failure to pass after two attempts results in separation. A valid driver's license and state driver’s license approval are mandatory. Minimum Education and Experience High school or GED diploma plus four years of experience in construction, inspection, erection, or servicing of elevators and related equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Candidates must obtain QEI certification within one year of employment.
