Job Description

Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Amentum is seeking a Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join our team in Hawthorne, Nevada to support the Hawthorne Army Depot. As a Heavy Equipment Mechanic, you will perform a variety of maintenance, repairs and minor welding and fabrication of heavy equipment.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Repair or replace injection valves, cylinder heads, and gaskets. Repair clutches, transmission systems, differentials, air compressors, pumps, filter units, starting engines, generators, governors, hydraulic systems, air systems, heating and cooling systems, steering systems, electrical systems, and associated components.
  • Repair various specialized mechanical parts of equipment. Steam clean equipment and parts as required. Operate hoists, dollies, jacks, and other carrying devices for handling heavy objects.
  • Trouble shooting of hydraulic and electrical systems. Be able to use a cutting torch in its proper manner. Complete PM's in the allotted time given.
  • Minor fabricating and welding as needed not to exceed major rebuilds. Welding and Fabricating: Be able to Stick/weld wire feed weld.
  • Perform all work safely and with the utmost concern for the safety of self and other employees.
  • Perform all work in compliance with environmental permits and regulations.
  • Be at work when scheduled and maintain a good attendance record. May be required to work overtime.
  • Be able to look up papers and orders if needed. Know how to look up parts in parts book and on computer.
  • Follow Safety Data Sheet guidelines for handling, storage, and disposal of Hazardous Materials.
  • Keep work area clean and maintain a safe work area.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Three (3) years as a heavy equipment mechanic working with diesel engines, generators, electrical apparatus, power takeoff, hydraulic, and air systems.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Applicant must be able to read blueprints, sketches, and specifications.
  • Good writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be able to operate a computerized based terminal and be computer literate in common software applications and able to operate general office equipment.
  • Must maintain fitness-for-duty standards to perform the essential functions of the position, to include any HWAD drill, contingency and/or emergency requirement.
  • Must be able to work in a constant state of alertness in a safe manner.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain all certifications as required by the Master Training Plan.
  • Must have a valid State driver's license and pass an MVR check.
  • Must also be able to obtain and maintain a clearance through the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms and be favorably vetted through the NCIC III System and site access. Must be a United States or naturalized citizen able to obtain and maintain this clearance and access. Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret US Government Clearance. Note: US Citizenship is required to obtain a Secret Clearance.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Certifiable technical or trade school education highly desirable.
  • Knowledge/skills in Computer diagnostics, AC repair and certification, and tire repair is desirable.
  • Knowledge/skills in the repair of heavy duty mobile equipment such as bulldozers, tractors, graders, power shovels, locomotive, diesel powered trucks, buses, and material handling equipment, preferred.

Safety Sensitive

This position is designated as a safety sensitive position and is subject to the requirements of the HWAD Medical Surveillance Plan and Matrix and the HWAD A&D Program. As a condition of employment, candidates and incumbents must favorably complete a personnel security investigation, drug testing, medical exam and respiratory screening, and must meet and maintain personnel suitability and reliability requirements established by 29 CFR and Army Regulations: AR 190-11, AR 190-13 and DOD Contractors Safety Manual 4145.26.

Compensation Details:

$29.88 - $40.09 The compensation range or hourly rate listed for this position is provided as a good-faith estimate of what the company intends to offer for this role at the time this posting was issued. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as job responsibilities, education, experience, skills, internal equity, market data, applicable collective bargaining agreements, and relevant laws.
